A lot of time, gagging is an airway response issue. We rarely work directly on a gagging reflex. What we work on is getting all the pieces working the they should be: tongue posture, jaw/tongue dissociation, nasal breathing and swallow. What we've found, is the gag reflex diminishes as we move through therapy. As we open the airway up with more muscular and neurological control to the nasal airway, most of the times the gagging just drops away. If that doesn’t work, then we may look at cranial nerve integration, chiropractic and working on specific desensitization.
